The Boulder short-track series kicked off tonight at the CU Research park. In an effort to help prepare for the upcoming cross season, I've decided to race both the B's and C's. Double the fun, right? Before the racing even started I was mentally out of it. I'm not really sure why. I just couldn't get myself into that place you need to be to suffer the short track way.
The B's race was first and there was a good size field. I decided ahead of time that I wouldn't even try to contend for the hole shot. This was one of many mistakes to come. You just can't go into a STCX race with a laid back I'm not going to contend the start attitude. STXC is about aggression and attitude. I promptly got behind a bunch of bone head riders who couldn't ride any of the technical sections. Now you have to understand, if I'm a better technical rider than the guy in front of me, he most certainly sucks. About a quarter of the way through the first lap my chain stopped engaging. Not sure what the problem was, but as I was trying to figure it out, the ENTIRE field passed me by. Bad head going in + technical problem at start of race + entire field passing you = lights out. I jumped back in and finished the race after almost quiting.
Next up was the C race. I got a good jump at the start and was 5th wheel going into the hole shot. Dan and Rob were just ahead in the 2nd and 3rd position. The start of the race was way slow compared to the B's. After about 3/4 of the first lap I just felt like crap and as we came around to the start/finish area I just pulled the plug and pulled over and quit! Yep, quit. I've never done this before and I hope I never do it again.

I went into the pain cave tonight and didn't like what I saw. I ran away from it and it got the better of me.
Good times? Not so much.
